This is a popular question for a local business SEO guy like myself. I generally tell them that content is king and to focus on the words on the site, not the specifics, but it’s not always that straight forward. At some point you have to dig deep and start checking to make sure the site is done properly. Meta descriptions, H1 & H2 tags, clear and concise page copy, targeting keywords and following current web standards are things that need to be considered. This is called search engine optimization or SEO, and it is what I do.
In some rare cases you might have a website or a product that many other people are selling as well. If organic search marketing or SEO is not working, there is always PPC or pay-per-click advertising via Google Adwords. This is when you pay to have advertisements show up in specific places in Google search. Much like SEO, there is an art to doing PPC. It’s very easy to dump truckloads of money at Google and still not do well. I’ve worked for large companies with a variety of budgets and know the tricks to getting the most bang for your buck. Just because you have a small budget, dosen’t mean you cannot compete with the big boys.
