With smartphones, iPhones, iPads, Droids, Blackberries and more, everybody is accessing their email on the go, but nobody is following up. We think we are keeping up with our inbox, but in reality, we are just dropping the ball a lot.
Have you ever sent somebody an email, and waited and waited and waited for a reply? Weeks later you forget about it, and either forgot the topic all together or have to re-email the person.
It happens to me all the time lately and I blame email portability. I have done it myself. I am out, eating dinner, check my mail real quick and get an email that I cannot respond to instantly. I put my phone away, swearing to myself that I will followup, and promptly forget….forever.
Have you ever sent a very well crafted and detailed email, only to have the recipient obviously skim it, not digest it at all, and then further exacerbate the situation by not answering the questions you asked? This is exceedingly frustrating, and can be blamed on the same thing as well. Answering emails on the go or when your mind is not fully focused is not a good idea.
It’s possible. This happens to me at work, and at home both. I would bet I am not the only person it happens to either. I am not pointing fingers, but merely announcing my frustration in general.
I think task management needs to become more mainstream. People think they can remember everything, when in reality the people who multitask the most are also the most ineffective.
I have recently worked Producteev into my workflow. I can add tasks to it via my phone or the web, and I can also forward emails to it that get created as tasks. It has helped me remember things I might normally forget. It may not be the solution for you however. I have used hundreds of task management systems before I found one I was able to use consistently.
